imprints: gender | films | intersections

Films, stories and conversations that offer poignant explorations of a range of complex and interconnected gendered experiences, celebrating the diversities of our beings, our individual and collective desires, resistances and solidarities. Produced, mentored and developed under the Rough Edges Uncode Fellowships, distinct in form, approach and expression, they provoke reflections on the truths of our complicated existence; recognise the many textures of our experiences, the tyranny of persistent patriarchies, barriers and stereotypes, the vulnerabilities and interiorities of our beings, in interaction with our caste, class, religion and work, even as they engage with questions around film practice, the act of looking through the camera and finding and framing the everyday stories of women.

The following six films will be screened at 27th Madurai Film Festival 2025

1. LOG KYA KAHENGE | WHAT WILL PEOPLE SAY BY RAFINA KHATUN
40 min | Hindi, Gujarati with English Subtitles | 2024

Gulnaaz remains committed to using community radio to shed light on injustices and oppressions faced by marginalised communities, despite constant scrutiny and control by her family and community. Through her empathetic storytelling, she brings attention to untold narratives and advocates for unity and harmony. Amidst her fight for social change, Gulnaaz grapples with her own struggles for freedom and autonomy. This is the story of a young Muslim woman dreaming differently in a patriarchal society determined to silence her.

2. HUMARE BEECH MEIN (IN BETWEEN US) BY RAJKUMARI PRAJAPATI AND RUCHIKA NEGI
35 minutes | Hindi with English subtitles | 2023

A conversation between two women about making a film on caste. How does one show the ordinary, viscerally? How do you use the camera to  reveal structures of power and, maybe, even take back some power for ourselves? How does image-making help us negotiate, question and reflect on our differences? And as documentarians, how do we film caste? What do we show? What do we hide? Who has access? Who refrains? Shot on mobile phone cameras in western Uttar Pradesh, the Film seeks to explore the positions of the two women, Rajkumari, a social activist from Lalitpur UP, and Ruchika, a documentary filmmaker and educator from New Delhi, within the stratified structure of caste.

3. MAKING SPACE BY NIKITA PARIKH
14 min | Hindi with English Subtitles | 2024

Alsana lives in a small, chaotic neighbourhood in Ahmedabad, cut off from the rest of the city by an 85 acre landfill on one side and a highway on the other. A room of one’s own is hard to come by, but Alsana has a corner where only her rules apply. It takes on different forms - each an expression of her inner life, at odds with the world. Meanwhile, Alsana’s drawings show signs of the society seeping in, as she grapples with her identity and conflicts closer to home.

4. PARI BY PRIYA SEN
31 minutes | Hindi with English subtitles | 2023

Pari attempts to describe an event in the days of Pari and Praveen, a violent rupture that allowed in a life held by desire and not duty. In this film, they recount their love story against the undertones and backdrop of threat and violence. The present is both fraught and romantic; the disruption of a past moment finds momentary comfort in recall; the future is hopeful.

B25 BY RAQEEB AND MANVENDRA

34 min | Hindi and English with English Subtitles | 2024

Inside the walls of B25 is a sanctuary, where lives intersect, stories intertwine and people flourish. The film offers glimpses of these unconventional bonds and experiences, that reframe notions of home and belonging, while reflecting on queerness, love, chosen families, gender, violence, identity and freedom, against the backdrop of a rapidly changing india.

6. UMBRO BY PRACHEE BAJANIA

34 min | Gujarati and Hindi with English Subtitles | 2024

Umbro, the threshold of a home, is the liminal space that speaks to the lives of women, including the filmmaker's mother and her friends who live in the small town of Dhrangadhra in central Gujarat, India. The film explores joyful friendships among women, routinely dismissed and unsung - carrying in them moments of shared stories, solidarities, conflicts and, most of all, routine acts of resistance. Umbro attempts to locate these flights of desire in the everyday, while celebrating the women’s indomitable love for life, and each other.

Films :

Chun Chun Mati (Dir : Sanjay Barnela; 10.35 min; Documentary)

This cine-poem, Chun Chun Maati, attempts to evoke the eternal spirit of pastoral communities roaming with their animals across the planet in a way of life that is deeply attuned to nature, bringing out their resilience, fortitude and the value of impermanence! Where else would you come across people who live by the maxim, "everyday uncertainty is a certainty"!

Small Time Cinema (Dir : Priya Naresh ; 29 min; Documentary)

Small-Time Cinema is a documentary that follows two Youtube filmmaking groups, one living in Balochistan, Pakistan, and one, in Assam, India. The film follows these groups, as they make space for their complex history and cultures, beyond a blanket Indian or Pakistani identity.

Dukhu Majhi - Son of the barren land (Dir : Somnath Mondal;  28.25 min; Documentary)

This documentary is regarding a relentless struggle of a solitary man in his unique way to save the mother earth.

The old man - Dukhu Majhi lives in the district of Purulia (W. Bengal), where the temperature rises upto 50 degree Celsius in the summer. He had somehow been inspired by his father in childhood and later on by a Govt. campaign on the need of plantation. There he came to know how trees invite rain and supply oxygen in the environment. He also feels that people need shadows from the scorching sun.

My Heart is an Ocean (Dir : Tanvi Jadwani; 21.30 min; Short fiction)

As the water recedes the reclaimed shore of Mumbai every evening, three children living on its shore in a small fishing ghetto come out to play on this temporary playground. The sea dictates game of the day. On a lucky day when herons are spotted hovering over the sea, it's a day to catch fish in shallow waters. One evening after fish are caught, Chirag declares that he wants to take all the fish home to build the biggest aquarium anyone has ever seen. This leads to a fight among playmates.

Banana Republic (Dir : Anas Rashad; 8.40 min; Short fiction)

A traditional family discovers the joy of having their daughter-in-law convert to their faith. However, after meeting their son, the excitement is short-lived.

Missing Since 6.12.1956 (Dir : Anand Pande; 19.58 min; Short fiction)

As the largest democracy, India takes pride in its freedom fighters, social reformists and policymakers. Today, this pride is demonstrated in the form of "hero worship" by erecting statues; displaying photos and mass celebrating the birth and death anniversaries... ignoring the key messages and thoughts propagated by the leaders.

This short film begins with two teachers at a government school in a small village finding out that they must be ready overnight for a surprise inspection by the senior government official in the morning. But they are missing an important photo from the school office wall. The photo is of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar.

We welcome you all!
